Quick Takes

In my world, it’s never too early to plan ahead. Especially when it comes to travel. And I always love researching places for our summer and fall wanderings. With today’s restrictions on travel, I’m planning in a somewhat detached way with fingers crossed, and hopeful that state and national parks will open up their campgrounds soon. We are totally self-contained with our sweet little trailer so that gives us some measure of safety and comfort for future travels.

I’ve created a Quick Takes section that has short descriptions and photographs of places to visit—mostly around the Pacific Northwest. It’s a growing list of places with brief descriptions based on our journeys and breathtaking scenery. Below are two new “Takes” from the section. These are beautiful places worth checking out on the Oregon Coast. Definitely spots we hope to see this summer.

Also, check out the entire Quick Takes section for more glorious spots to explore and keep your fingers crossed that we can all enjoy some summer travel. Be well!

Shore Acres State Park, Oregon

This park is located near Coos Bay and features gorgeous views of the Pacific ocean from its high bluff location. Sandstone cliffs and monstrous waves make this worth a stop. The sculpted rock bluffs demonstrate the power of giant waves and stormy weather. A short bluff trail follows the rugged coast north to Sunset Bay State Park. The park name says it all—perfect for the quintessential romantic sunset picture. Along the way you’ll get nice views of sea stacks, hauled out harbor seals, and nesting cormorants. On the day that we visited, luck was with us as we spied a pair of nesting Pigeon Guillemots. Bonus: For a bit more adventure, take the winding trail from Shore Acres down to Simpson Beach. You’ll get great looks of hauled out seals and sea lions.

Bandon Beach, Oregon

This is a double bonus stop. Not only do you get a beautiful beach with amazing sea stacks, lovely overlooks, and iconic sunsets, you can stay in the charming town of Bandon. It’s a tiny town with big amenities. You’ll find an ample selection of cafes, coffee houses, bars, boutiques, and lodging. For great seafood check out The Crab Shack. It’s a super casual outdoor restaurant with superb seafood—especially the crab dinners. Bonus: If you book a room in town, you can walk to Bandon Beach to capture your fabulous sunset picture.
